Flames of War & Team Yankee In Russia

Flames of War & Team Yankee In Russia

The last two weekends were highlighted for us with two competitive play events held by Voevoda club at Geek Wars store in Moscow, Russia.

On the15th of October, an eight player Flames of War Early War V4 1650 pts tournament took place for the Russian competitive players on the road to the Russian Flames of War Grand Tournament 2018 in March and, surely, the European Team Championship in August. As the ETC rules pack is still to be decided upon, we used the ETC points level and tried out the Battle Plans to determine the missions to be played. That was a new and exciting experience that incorporated both team play and decision making into a singles tourney!

The new changes to the EW/LW V4 rules also made a distinct impact on the meta. We got all possible variants of the Soviet tank lists with heavily armoured Valentines, Matildas, T-34s and KV tanks, two of them boasted 12 Katyushas each as well. As a response to this heavy armour threat and the vulnerability of the panzerknackers during defensive fire, the German players opted for pionier-heavy lists, either a Leichte Pionierkompanie or a Mittlere Panzerkompanie with 2 full pionier platoons. There was also 2 Western Allies lists, a French armoured car company and a British infantry list with Matilda support.

The Lend-lease tanks under command of Ilya Grebenkin earned the victory in the tournament, winning all of the three games. The list was highly competitive and historically accurate at the same time, and the well-painted army brought that shine of perfection to the victory!

A week after the first event, on the 21st of October, a Team Yankee 25 pts tournament was held. The Team Yankee community is still developing in Moscow, so we decided to go for the minimal points level and try out the very core of the growing armies. Not all of the participants registered managed to actually play the games, but still, the tourney was a success, as we got 4 players (one of them from the city of Vladimir – the flagman of the Team Yankee movement in Russia), and battle tested 2 tank lists, a Mechanized infantry list, and Afgantsy Airborne list!

The WarPac lists dominated the battlefields, scoring a total of 3 victories and a draw, so Alexandr Varyvoda, the commander of the Afgantsy, got first place. The games were tense and dramatic, no games were an easy win. The dice made a bit more difference here in comparison with the higher points level games, but that was still a well-balanced game more dependent on the tactical decisions than on the lucky dice rolls.

Next month we plan to organise even more events, so stay tuned, comrade!
