The Ardennes Offensive
In December 1944 the German forces on the Western Front made one last major push in the Ardennes and Alsace-Lorraine, trying to split the Allied forces in half and force them to negotiate a peace treaty. It was a daring all-or-nothing gamble.

The Ardennes Offensive: German Forces in Lorraine and the Ardennes, September 1944 - February 1945
Volksgrenadier Company (GBX72) The Volksgrenadier units were armed with a higher proportion of automatic weapons to create a higher volume of firepower. The Sturmgewehr 44 (or StG 44) assault rifle was used to arm two of the platoons in each Volksgrenadierkompanie, giving them devastating firepower, but only at short ranges. They were also issued with very large numbers of Panzerfaust anti-tank weapons, once again short-ranged, but still a powerful asset against Allied tanks. The highly efficient MG42 machine-gun still played an important role with the assault rifle armed Sturm (assault) platoons issued with two in the third squad, and three issued to the third Schützen (rifle) platoon to provide their main firepower.

StG44 Assault Rifles
The StG44 assault rifle (Sturmgewehr 44, Assault Rifle 44) is an amazingly innovative weapon that gave birth to a whole generation of modern infantry assault rifles used around the world today. It combined the ease of use of a carbine with the firepower of a submachine-gun.

Assault Rifle teams have a ROF of 3 and a Range of 8"/20cm. Like SMG teams, movement doesn't affect the ROF of Assault Rifle teams, so they shoot at a ROF of 3 even if they move, but drop to ROF 1 if Pinned Down.

Close Combat Clasp in Gold
Even before his division began their attack on 16 December 1944, Moldenhauer had spent over 70 days in close combat and was an expert at holding his men together in the face of the enemy.
Any platoon joined by Moldenhauer entirely made up of Infantry teams, with or without Transport teams or Combat Attached Gun teams, that is not Pinned Down at the start of the Assault Step, that becomes Pinned Down in the Assault Step, can take a Motivation Test.

  • If the test is passed, remove the Pinned Down marker.
  • Otherwise, the platoon remains Pinned Down.

If the platoon receives five hits from Defensive Fire, they still fall back and the assault is over..
