The Battle of the Bulge
In December 1944 the German forces were supposed to be on the back foot, so their desperate push in the Ardennes took the Allies by surprise. Desperate defence by the American and British Commonwealth forces gradually turned to counterattack as they fought to erase the 'Bulge'.

These ‘dog faces’ were well trained and some have seen combat. They are also well known for their scrounging capabilities, augmenting
their platoons with unauthorised weapons such as bazookas and
submachine-guns stripped from transport vehicles. While strictly against
the rules, the GIs know better than others that they’ll need the added
firepower in the coming campaigns.
The triangular formation of an infantry division means that you can count on three rifle platoons in your company. This gives you flexibility to keep one platoon in reserve while the others hold the line.

Automatic Rifles
The US Army is equipped with the M1 Garand self-loading rifle, M1 Carbine, and the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), giving their infantry intense short-range firepower and allowing them to maintain their rate of fire while moving.
Rifle and Carbine teams do not suffer the usual +1 to hit penalty for firing a ROF 1 weapon while moving or Pinned Down.
When not Pinned Down, Rifle and Carbine teams re-roll all failed rolls to hit in Defensive Fire during assaults.
|
Examples of The Command Teams
|
|
|
The US Army was the only army in the world to
fully equip its soldiers with semi-automatic weapons. The M1 Garand
rifle reloaded itself after each shot, firing as fast as the soldier
could pull the trigger, while other armies relied on bolt-action rifles
that required the soldier to work the bolt after each shot. Combined
with the Browning Automatic Rifle (B A R , but never ‘bar’ to a GI), the
Garand gave each American soldier more firepower than individual soldiers in any other other. |
|
|
Examples of the Bazooka Teams |
Initially designed to fill a major gap in the
US
infantryman’s arsenal, the Bazooka made a major leap in the evolution
of
man-portable anti-tank weapons. The Bazooka got its nickname for its
similar shape to the popular 30s and 40s radio comedian Bob Burns’
musical instrument, a home made trombone he called a "Bazooka".
Right: Bob Burn's Bazooka.

|
Examples of the Rifle Teams
|
|
|
Other armies lacking the same individual firepower relied on smaller squads armed with a light machine-gun
to supplement their firepower. This provided them with greater firepower when defending, but was of less benefit when advancing.
|
|
|
Flames Of War reflects this in the squad-level firepower of the different platoons. US rifle squads have three Automatic Rifle teams, while most other armies have squads of just two Rifle/MG teams. This gives the American squad three shots whether advancing or defending, and when assaulted it re-rolls any misses, effectively adding another one or two shots. By comparison any other squad only has two shots when advancing, but manages four shots when defending.
|
This makes the Americans much more effective in attacks, and nearly as effective at long range and potentially more effective at short range when defending—a triumph of American industrial might and manpower.
