Road To Panzerschreck 2018 - Casey and Chris

Road To Panzerschreck 2018:
Casey and Chris

with Casey Davies
If you are a member of the Flames Of War Modeling and Painting Facebook Page you will have seen that over the last couple of months that I have been painting up a unit of 8.8cm railway cars for Panzerschreck this year.

It’s been one of those projects that I have wanted to do ever since the models came out in Nachtjäger, but never had the time to do. Since I’m teaming up with Chris again this year I thought It was time to finally break out the big guns

Building and painting the cars should have been straight forward, but since we have just released the plastic 88 I decided to convert the cars up to use the new plastics as they are far nicer than the old metal 88s. Luckily there wasn’t too much work involved.

I ended up getting more rail-cars than I needed, so at the same time as painting the rail-cars I also converted up some flatbed cars to use as terrain

Chris and I tend to take oddball armies to Panzerschreck as we are going down for the road trip and our lists are quite fun to play when you aren’t being too serious about winning.

The list I’m taking is the SS Hitlerjugend Ausbildungs Kompanie from the Nachtjäger Digital release. I chose to do this list as it means the core of the army uses some of the SS that I have already painted. It meant that I just needed to paint the rail cars and the SS-tank-hunter platoon.

The rail-cars are just about finished now, just needing a few final touches, and I’m about half-way through the SS-tank Hunter Platoon now. Hopefully I’ll be able to take some more photos next week of the finished army.

Originally, I was pushing Chris to finish his Beute Panzer list and field nothing but Early-War French tanks as he has been wanting to paint that list for ages and I thought it would be a hilarious list to partner for my force. Unfortunately, life (in the form of sick children) got in his way so we decided to go with a list he already had painted in the form of Reluctant Trained Jagdtigers.

This is not the first time Chris has taken Jagdtigers down to Panzerschreck, back in 2014 he originally took a very similar looking force.

In terms of strategy I figure that I’ll use my infantry platoons to protect Chris’ Jagdtigers who will be providing the heavy anti-tank and are generally there just be hard to kill. My Tank-hunter Platoon will be quite aggressive. Thanks to the Concealed In The Rail-yard special rule the 88 rail-cars will always get at least one round of shooting, but I figure that they won’t actually last long once they open fire. Their job is simply to thin out enemy tank numbers for the Jagdtigers.

I thought about taking one unit of 4 rail cars so I could ambush 18 88mm shots, but though they would be too difficult to deploy as one unit and would be more versatile as 2 units.

That about wraps it up for what we will take to Panzerschreck 2018. Thanks for reading.
