More Missions Update
Updated 14 September 2017
with Phil Yates

Gamers have played many thousands of games since Team Yankee and Version 4 of Flames Of War were released, many of them played using the More Missions packs. With so many games being played, we’ve received lots of useful feedback on how the packs can be improved. After pondering the feedback and suggestions, we’ve made some changes and now we need you help in testing them.

Please download the new More Missions pack for Flames Of War or Team Yankee, or both, and try them out. Tell us how your games went and give us your thoughts on the changes over the next month. We’ll take a look at your feedback, make any changes needed, and the new More Missions packs will then be official.

More Missions Update

New Win Conditions
The first change to look at is the Winning the Game sections of the missions. We’ve changed them to make it easier for both sides to score a victory, reducing the number of games that end in a mutual loss.

One of the main factors in having games end in a mutual loss was the removal of the condition that allowed the defender to win if the game timed out (to discourage a ‘Sitzkrieg’ approach to the game), without adjusting the other conditions under which the players could win. The key concept of the victory conditions should be that a game is over when the attacker has stopped attacking, or the defender has ceased actively trying to hold the objective, so that is what we set out to explore.

Under the proposed rules, when you are tasked with taking an objective, you win if you start a turn on an objective, and end your turn with no enemy teams within 4”/10cm of that objective. This has the effect of requiring the enemy to actively fight to hold an objective. They can’t just ‘feed’ the objective a team or two a turn and keep the game going. If they don’t either kick the attacker back off the objective or keep sufficient force on the objective to contest right through until their next turn, they have ceased actively defending the objective and lose.

Conversely, when you are tasked with defending an objective, you win if you end a turn with no enemy teams within 8”/20cm of the objective. This makes it much harder for the attacker to stop attacking and hide to drag the game out to a mutual loss. They have to close with the objective to keep the game going, reducing the potential hiding places and making them more vulnerable to a counterattack. If they don’t keep pressure on an objective, they have stopped attacking and lose.

Battle Plans
The next change is the Battle Plans table. The main changes are:

  • The Team Yankee pack has replaced the combination of a Battle Plans table and three mission selection tables with a single integrated table to match the Flames Of War pack. The players have been labelled NATO and Warsaw Pact to make it easier to look up your result.
  • The three battle plan options have been renamed to Attack, Manoeuvre, and Defend to make the likely outcome of selecting them more obvious.
  • The balance between the options has been adjusted to make all three a strong choice for the appropriate types of force match ups.
  • The number of missions for each combination of plans has been increased to reduce the chances of players playing the same mission repeatedly.

The new Battle Plans table should produce a greater variety of games, both due to the greater variety of missions from any particular combination of plans, and the rebalancing of the plans.

Updated Missions for Team Yankee
Following on from the new version of Flames Of War, we’ve added a mission and updated several others for Team Yankee to make them more exciting to play and more balanced in outcome.

  • Annihilation: We added this mission to the pack as it makes a great mission for training beginners or just for a quick beat ‘em up.
  • Rearguard: This mission has replaced Fighting Withdrawal as it is more balanced and produces a more tense game.
  • Night: A game will now always have at least some daylight component as playing at night when your opponent’s technology outshines yours can really darken your mood.

More to Come

We have an updated the More Missions Pack this week (14 Sept) with the addition of the Contact mission as a replacement for Hasty Attack in the Battle Plans, and changed the Minefields entries to cover both Mid War and Early/Late War periods.
