“The sun seemed brighter today, as it looms in the sky providing too much damn light! The hum of engines among the trees sounds deafening when trying to mask ones approach.

Berlin is there for the taking, and the glorious Red Army will take this prize.

Some say it’s a 'race'; we want to beat the Allies to the Reichstag. But this is not about beating the Americans or the British; this is about claiming our right, a victory over the fascists!

The banner arrived this morning with the order, or should I say with the ‘honour’. We must hoist the banner over the Reichstag to show that we have taken the city in the name of Mother Russia, in the name of all those who have paid the ultimate price for our victory this day.“

~ Andrei Mikhailov, Razvedki High Commander.

This past weekend at my local gaming club, T.C.O.W. (or That Club Out West), my brother Michael hosted the final game in his Berlin campaign. This was it, the brass ring, Berlin itself and man did he go all out; building an amazing version of the Reichstag and various terrain pieces to represent the shattered German capital.

We set-up our table in an “L” shape, one-side providing a platform for the American and British advance and the other side was dedicated to the Soviet advance.

Representing the Germans were Battlefront’s own Wayne Turner along with Gavin van Rossum, Patrick Gribble, Greg Lockton, and Jonathan Carrier. For the Americans and British, were Damian Caulfield and Daryl Painter. Commanding the forces of the Red Army was myself (Andrew Haught), Michael Haught, and Steve London.

The mission objectives (by nation) were:

  • The Soviets: Raise banner over Reichstag; eliminate Hitler.

  • The Americans and British: Advance their line, push the Germans out, and eliminate Hitler.

  • The Germans: Stop the Allies at all costs and get Hitler out of Berlin.

Each player had a force consisting of 1000 points that could re-spawn on their own objectives. I, myself had to re-spawn my army twice in order to make any headway against the stubborn German defence.

On the opposing front, the Allies found the going slightly easier despite Wayne and Patrick’s best efforts. With all of the German’s King Tigers (four in all) deployed against Soviets, this may have explained the Allies easier time.

Near the end of the first game, I managed the impossible. Armed with nothing better than an M10 I managed to kill one of the King Tigers on a Hail Mary side shot from across the table, killing Greg’s Company Commander.

With that moral victory under my belt, I pressed forward until time was called and we packed up for the day. The next game is planned for a fortnight’s time and will be focusing on the city fighting and the chance to have the honour of raising the banner over the Reichstag.
