The Ardennes Offensive
In December 1944 the German forces on the Western Front made one last major push in the Ardennes and Alsace-Lorraine, trying to split the Allied forces in half and force them to negotiate a peace treaty. It was a daring all-or-nothing gamble.

Sturm Platoon (Winter) (GE843) The Volksgrenadier units were armed with a higher proportion of automatic weapons to create a higher volume of firepower. The Sturmgewehr 44 (or StG 44) assault rifle was used to arm two of the platoons in each Volksgrenadierkompanie, giving them devastating firepower, but only at short ranges. They were also issued with very large numbers of Panzerfaust anti-tank weapons, once again short-ranged, but still a powerful asset against Allied tanks. The highly efficient MG42 machine-gun still played an important role with the assault rifle armed Sturm (assault) platoons issued with two in the third squad.

StG44 Assault Rifles
The StG44 assault rifle (Sturmgewehr 44, Assault Rifle 44) is an amazingly innovative weapon that gave birth to a whole generation of modern infantry assault rifles used around the world today. It combined the ease of use of a carbine with the firepower of a submachine-gun.

Assault Rifle teams have a ROF of 3 and a Range of 8"/20cm. Like SMG teams, movement doesn't affect the ROF of Assault Rifle teams, so they shoot at a ROF of 3 even if they move, but drop to ROF 1 if Pinned Down.

The Sturm Platoon is made up of a HQ section, two Assault squads and a MG squad. The Sturm Platoon in unique in the fact that two of its three squads are all with the StG44 assault rifle. The third squad is an MG squad armed with the MG42. All teams in the Sturm Platoon are modelled on medium four-hole bases included in the blister pack. Each squad is made up of two teams and one team in each squad must contain an NCO figure. To model the an Assault squad, arrange an NCO figure, a Panzerfaust figure, a Rifleman figure and one assault rifle figure on a medium four-hole base. Next, create the second team by arranging a Panzerfaust figure and three assault rifle figure on another medium four-hole base. Repeat this process to create the second assault squad for your Sturm Platoon.

The MG squad is also modelled on medium four-hole base. The MG squad contains two teams, one of which needs to contain an NCO figure. The model the MG squad, arrange an NCO figure, a Panzerfaust figure, a matching MG gunner and loader (see the MG figures below for further details). The second team contains a matching MG gunner and loader, a Panzerfaust figure and one assault rifle figure.
