The fate of a nation hangs in the balance. Israel cannot lose even a single battle. One defeat would mean the destruction of the tiny Jewish state. Not waiting to be attacked by the Arab forces massing on its borders, Israel strikes first.

Hundreds of tanks sweep across the borders, punching deep into the enemy defences, seeking out the enemy tanks. The infantry follow behind, assaulting the fortifications, clearing the way for the advance to continue.

A bare six days later, the war was over. A thousand tanks lay strewn across the desert. Tens of thousands of soldiers lay dead and wounded. Israel had survived, but the Arabs vowed that there would be no peace with Israel.

The Six-Day War
In June 1967, escalating tensions between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations erupted into open warfare when the Israelis launched a surprise air strike against the opposing air forces on the ground, followed by an attack against the Arab forces in the Sinai Peninsula. Within six days they had decisively beaten every Arab force opposing them. Despite its brevity, the Six-Day War was a complex affair fought on three fronts, and involved non-stop battles between an unusual variety of forces.

The Tanks Of '67
In the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel pitted its roughly 800 tanks against the nearly 2500 tanks of the surrounding Arab nations. While both sides fielded modern designs like the British Centurion, the American M48 Patton, and the Soviet T-55, these were expensive. Older designs dating back to the Second World War made up the numbers.

Missions Of '67
The overwhelming narrative of the Six-Day War revolves around sweeping Israeli victories over the Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian forces, effortlessly pushing hundreds of miles through the Sinai and West Bank while their foes faltered and ran. The more realistic story is that there were many tough fights where personal bravery, and sacrifice were found on both sides, and risky, yet brilliant tactics, were required to win the day.

Battlefields Of The Six-Day War
Despite much of the fighting taking place in one of the most inhospitable deserts in the world, the battlefields of the Six-Day War were far from barren. The opening battles in the Gaza Strip were fought in and around built-up areas. The battles in the Sinai Desert that followed were mostly fought over defensive positions where the terrain limited movement. In the central front, the West Bank of the Jordan River is a green and verdant land. To the north, the Golan Heights on the Syrian border are steep, rocky, and desolate.

Israeli Super Jeeps
Let me start by saying that I like the thought of the highly-trained and well-armed Israeli tanks pitting their smaller numbers against the hordes of Jordanian and UAR troops. On the other hand, if you like putting down a few more bits and pieces on the table, but still want the punch, you could make worse choices than the P’lugah Sayur (Long-Range Patrol Company).

The Arab-Israeli War of 1967 presents a whole new palette of colours for modellers. The Israelis used a range of Comrade Khaki and olive colours, while the United Arab Republic used unadorned pale creams, and the Jordanians used sand, green, and Military Khaki. This article is an introductory guide to painting the forces that fought in the Six Day War.

Desert Fort Rules
On 5 June, 1967, Israel surprised the Arab forces massing on its borders with a pre-emptive strike. By the end of the day a hundred thousand soldiers and several thousand tanks were locked in battle — a struggle that would decide the fate of Israel.

At least one battle was fought over an old Turkish fort in the middle of the desert. While totally outdated as a fortification, an old fort can still be useful feature to anchor a defence.
